Iberian instruments are quite rare. The technical drawing of this extraordinary Portuguese harpsichord by Joachim José Antunes is due to Christopher Nobbs who carried it out during its restoration. Until 2016, the instrument has been at the Finchcocks Collection in Goudhurst (Kent, UK). The harpsichord, made in Lisbon in 1785, has a wide keyboard and it is scaled for brass strings. If compared to coeval Italian instruments, its construction is much stronger. It is ideal for the performance of Scarlatti’s sonatas because of its very singable timbre and the generous forte of the two coupled 8’ stops.
