G. Silbermann – 1749

G. Silbermann – 1749

A famous German organ maker, friend of J. S. Bach (who certainly knew his instruments), Gottfried Silbermann also boasted a remarkable production of other types of keyboard instruments. His version of the new hammer harpsichord is crucial in that he entirely adapted Cristofori’s piano action to the typical German harpsichord case. This contributed to the spread of the instrument in Europe.
Our model is a replica of an original dated 1749, now at the Germanisches National Museum in Nuremberg.
